Liposuction is the correction of body lines (contour). Liposuction is designed to remove excess fat from various areas of the body: chin, upper arms, chest, abdomen, waist, buttocks, thighs, knees, shins, ankles. Fat cells do not grow in the suctioned areas. If the patient’s weight were to increase, the new fat would accumulate evenly throughout the body. Liposuction surgery is not a way to lose weight. It is recommended to remove subcutaneous fat only where excess fat deforms the body contour. Liposuction can be performed in conjunction with abdominoplasty, arm or thigh lift surgery.

The best results are achieved when patients are of average weight with localized fat deposits and have elastic skin. If the patient is overweight (body mass index more than 28), weight reduction is recommended first.

How is liposuction surgery performed?

Liposuction surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia, except for the liposuction of small areas for which local anaesthesia is sufficient. The length of the operation depends on its volume. Ji gali trukti nuo keliolikos minučių iki kelių valandų.

Special cannulas – hollow stainless steel tubes with one or more suction holes – are used to suction the fat. They are connected to a special pump that creates negative pressure. The liposuction is carried out by making small incisions of about 4-5 mm in low-visibility areas of the body, such as skin folds or where underwear covers.

The sutures are removed 6-8 days after surgery.

Patients usually return to work after 1-2 weeks, and restrictions on physical activity should be maintained for about 2-4 weeks. The cosmetic effect of liposuction is long-lasting, but how long it lasts in a particular case depends on the patients’ lifestyle, diet and physical activity.

What is important to pay attention to after liposuction surgery?

  • Where the fat has been removed, subcutaneous bruising is visible and disappears within a few weeks.
  • After the operation, you will need to wear a special compression garment for about 6-8 weeks (sometimes shorter, depending on the area that has been liposuctioned) to reduce swelling and to help the remaining loose skin shrink faster.
  • The swelling and bruising usually disappear within two to three weeks.
  • After surgery, a course oflymphatic drainage massage of individual duration is recommended for maximum results.
  • Active physical activity should be avoided for 1-2 weeks. Two weeks after the operation, you can exercise and play sports as normal.
